Chef Kevin Bryant to head new Montrose seafood restaurant

Kevin Bryant is getting ready to swim with the fishes. In a good way.

The chef who opened the Capitol at St. Germain (and recently departed L’Olivier after a brief stint) is working on opening a new restaurant at 607 W. Gray in the former Bibas Diner spot.

The new restaurant, which is under construction and expected to open in March, will be called 11:11. Or Eleven 11. Either way, you can call it Eleven Eleven. The name, according to Bryant who will act as executive chef, is “a lucky number for them.”

Gaga fans want to be 1st in 'Monster Pit'

A line of diehard Lady Gaga fans started forming early Thursday, a full week before her concert at the Toyota Center with about a dozen youngsters spending the weekend outside the Toyota Center.

For the pop star's concert this Thursday, Houston fans are taking advantage of a first-come, first-serve policy for Lady Gaga's latest tour. Several tents are packed along the sidewalk across the street from the Toyota Center, where ticket holders have created an unofficial system using permanent markers to write down their place in line on the back of their hands.

Newly renovated Hooters

Newly renovated Hooters to be prototype for nationwide chain

What do you do when a younger, prettier version of you starts flirting with your man, or in this case, men?
You get yourself a sexy new dress.
The Hooters on Kirby was looking a little long in the tooth when Twin Peaks opened directly across the street 13 months ago. (OK, it’s the Southwest Freeway.)
Hooters has gone and gotten itself all gussied up. The wings joint will be celebrating its “grand unveiling” with a Sip n’ See VIP party 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Jan. 23. Party guests will include 2013 Hooters Girl of the Year Rachel Fashing and several of the Hooters Calendar Girls.
The revamp of the 20-year-old store now will serve as a prototype for future renovations and builds of the 400+ restaurant change.
“Hooters is exceptionally proud to reveal this design concept, reinvigorating the look and feel of our traditional restaurants without losing the essence of our iconic brand that the world has loved for 30 years,” Dave Henninger, chief marketing officer, Hooters of America, said in a release.

Two Houston bars debut on best beer bars list

Hay Merchant is a popular place for fans of craft beer.: Dave Rossman/ For the ChronicleHay Merchant is a popular place for fans of craft beer.: Dave Rossman/ For the Chronicle
Draft Magazine has released its list of America’s 100 best beer bars for 2013, and two Houston bars have cracked the lineup.
Hay Merchant and Petrol Station made the list for their large selections of beer on tap and unique atmospheres. Both bars are new to the honor.
Hay Merchant is popular for having 78 beers on tap, while Petrol Station stands out for being a converted gas station.
Here is what the site had to say about the two winners:
Hay Merchant

This frisky new spot along one of Houston’s main thoroughfares is brick-dressed and brings it with 78 beers on tap, 5 of which are on cask. Not only is the selection deep, but it’s one-of-a-kind: The bar lends barrels to breweries for one-off projects. Plus, the food’s got flair, from fried headcheese to Chicken Fried Texas Water Buffalo.

Petrol Station

This cozy neighborhood hideaway is small, but it hosts a sizable beer selection that makes hopheads in other parts of the state green. Join its active beer-loving community on Facebook and chat about the latest, greatest release, or just head in blindly (you won’t be disappointed) for a burger and beer in this Houston hop spot.

Fate of hanging Mini up in the air

The moral of this story: Get a permit before you hang what looks like a compact car from the side of a building.

A fiberglass shell of a Mini Cooper hangs in the balance in a tussle between Houston public works officials and the owners of a building on Kirby where the ersatz car is affixed above a public sidewalk.

City officials have ordered the sidewalk cordoned off and twice cited the car, not for parking violations, but for code issues.

"You can't just put up a sign without a permit," said public works spokesman Alvin Wright.
Workers at Internum, a furniture store that occupies the building at 3303 Kirby, referred questions to a spokesman, Patrick Chiu, who did not return phone messages Tuesday.

Macy's Downtown

Macy's will soon make final sale in downtown building

The downtown Macy's, a once-powerful shopping draw that in recent years had become more of a lunchtime hangout for office workers needing a new pair of shoes or a last-minute gift, will shut down this spring, the retailer said Thursday.

The owner of the building is planning to tear down the 10-story structure and develop an office tower in its place, Mayor Annise Parker said Thursday afternoon, addressing the store's closure and announcing a new plan to increase retail in downtown.
