A bridge to somewhere opening in Hermann Park

If all 6 million of Hermann Park's annual visitors showed up at once, more than three people would occupy every square foot. An absurd scenario, to be sure, but still a testament to the popularity of central Houston's premier urban green space.

With its zoo, theatrical productions and proximity to art and science museums, Hermann Park, which will mark its centennial in 2014, may be the best-explored real estate in town.

Now, with Friday's dedication of the $5 million Bill Coats Bike Bridge, visitors will, for the first time in decades, have easy access to 90 acres of parkland they may never have dreamed existed.

Houston's Turkey Day parade

Helium shortage could threaten Houston's Turkey Day parade

These are indeed tough economic times, but inflation is not something that should ordinarily affect Houston's annual Thanksgiving Day parade.

But this year towering inflatable balloons such as Nemo or Papa Smurf might not manage to get airborne next week because of a persistent worldwide shortage of helium.

The gas shortage has organizers of the city's 63rd Annual Holiday Parade scrambling to find enough suppliers to fill up their diverse balloons that have become a trademark of the parade.

"We've secured helium to meet some of our parade needs, and we are working to secure more," Kim Stoilis, president and chief executive officer of the Houston Festival Foundation, said in an email Wednesday. "We're excited about this holiday tradition and our parade director assures me that all of our balloons will be flying high on Thanksgiving morning."

Anti-virus pioneer John McAfee wanted for murder in Belize?

You are probably used to seeing the name “McAfee” as the ubiquitous anti-virus software searches your computer for viruses, but according to Gizmodo, it’s the police in Belize who are searching for founder John McAfee — to face murder charges.

According to Marco Vidal, head of the national police force’s Gang Suppression Unit, McAfee is a prime suspect in the murder of American expatriate Gregory Faull, who was gunned down Saturday night at his home in San Pedro Town on the island of Ambergris Caye. (Read the full story here)
