Checking out the new Hubcap Grill in Kemah
I was so curious to see Hubcap Grill burgermeister Ricky Craig’s new setup in Kemah that a friend and I drove down over the Fourth of July weekend, their first in business.
We had a swell time, from the good food to the short wait time (those will get longer, for sure) to the refreshing sea breezes that swept the dining deck, perched up on hurricane-proof stilts like the whole cottage. Also choice was the chance to see Craig as excited as a kid over his appealing new venue.
“I’ve got a walk-in cooler for the first time!” he enthused, showing off a serious beer fridge and a smaller cold locker, both on the ground floor. He was just as happy about the ad hoc decor fashioned by his brother-in-law, whose talents with miscellaneous auto parts and the art of six-pack collage bring to mind an oil-patch Martha Stewart.
The vibe is just as eccentric as the downtown Hubcap Grill and its sister burger-and-beer garden on 19th Street in the Heights, but endowed with more creature comforts and visual appeal. There’s even an air-conditioned indoor dining room in which powerful ceiling fans amplify the cooling effect.
