Divers get a shock in Gulf as Great White shark swims by

Divers taking a dip in the Gulf have captured amazing video of a Great White shark that paid them a visit as they explored a wreck about 80 miles off the coast of Florida.

The video shows the group at depths of around 100 feet, looking down through a school of fish. A dark shadow can been seen swimming by with diver Dane Kelly's brother madly trying to point it out to his dive buddies.

"My brother's going crazy because he realizes what it is before we do," Dane Kelly explained to NBC2 News in Sanibel, Florida.

At times, the giant fish is hard to make out but the shape of a shark is as distinctive as it is ominous. Scientists say there is no doubt it was a Great White.

"Fortunately, most other sharks in the Gulf do not resemble white sharks at all," said Nick Whitney, staff scientist and manager at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota via email.

"About the only species that looks similar is the shortfin mako shark, which does not get as long or as girthy as the white shark. And the shark in the video is long and girthy," Whitney said.

Whitney estimates the shark in the video is about 12-14 feet long, saying that the body proportions and tail beat give away the fish's massive size.

Divers said they had no doubt what the shark was when it passed by.

Houston waterpark to reopen

Houston waterpark to reopen with millions in renovations and new name

The newly refurbished and renamed Wet 'n' Wild Splashtown opens Friday with a special guest appearance from a world champion flowboarder.

New rides are part of a multimillion dollar refurbishment that includes the rebranding of the former Splashtown park.

Xana-Kai Nash, the youngest women's flowboarding champion, will be there to show off one of the park's three new attractions.

According to the park website, the Flowrider is an "innovative body boarding experience that rolls out endless sheets of perfect waves at 35mph, moving 30,000 gallons of water per minute."

Other new rides opening later in the month include the Big Kahuna, a "mega serpentine raft-ride" and an expanded kids area called Wet 'n' Wild Jr. that will include eight water slides.

The park would not reveal the exact cost of the new look but said they are sure visitors will like it.
"I think the guests are going to be pleastantly surprised," said park spokeswoman Julie Kuenstle. "You can see a brand new sign, bright colors, the entrance plaza has been opened up to accommodate stollers. It all gives off a very relaxing, Caribbean-style vibe."

Kuenstle said guests' views were taken into account in the new design leading to more shaded areas, lounge chairs and a second parking lot.

The park is open weekends from May 2-18, then daily from Thursday, May 22 until Aug. 24. It will return to weekends only from Aug. 30 until  Sept. 14.

The Big Kahuna and Wet 'n' Wild Jr are scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend.
