Houston concerts to pay tribute to innovative composer

John Cage - the brilliant, strange and unique figure who stood at the forefront of avant-garde music for decades - would be 100 years old on Wednesday.

The composer who jabbed foreign objects between the strings of a piano, wrote music by rolling dice and famously created a piece of musical silence died in 1992 - so he won't be around to celebrate the occasion. But devotees scattered around the word aren't letting his birthday pass without notice.

Commemorative events are set in Cage's birthplace of Los Angeles and also in his adopted home of New York. Washington, D.C., is hosting a seven-day Cage Centennial Festival, with performances at the National Gallery and the Smithsonian, among other venues.
