Mansion dangles over cliff on Texas' Lake Whitney (UPDATE)
The owners of a crumbling house on a crumbling cliff have decided to pull the plug on their vacation home, the Waco Tribune reports.
At or around 10 a.m. Friday, officials will burn the mansion that is currently hovering over Lake Whitney. The decision to burn the home was not made by Hill County officials.
Once the home has been scorched, county officials and the Heart of Texas Demolition LLC will pull any debris back from the cliff's edge.
All of this is to prevent any environmental damage that could be caused by the $700,000 home. Had the homeowners simply left the mansion to tumble into the lake below, they would be on the hook for cleaning it up.
Randy Cephus, a spokesman for the Fort Worth District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, says the erosion, the weight of the home's leveling material and drought conditions have all contributed to the home's literal downfall.
