Quaker Steak & Lube drives a new theme home in Houston
In my travels, there was hardly a week that went by when I didn’t encounter someone in a Hard Rock T-shirt. Often it would bear the name of some far-flung outpost such Sydney or Kuala Lumpur. I’d scratch my head and wonder “hmm, who goes to Australia and makes a bee line for Hard Rock?” It never ceases to amaze.
Despite the movement for locally sourced, chef-driven, farm-to-table, insert your favorite trendy phrase here, themed restaurants haven’t lost their luster. Spots such as Twin Peaks, Rainforest Cafe and Downtown Aquarium brim with customers.
I bring all this up because Quaker Steak & Lube opens its first Houston-area location at 2502 S. I-45 in in League City on June 18.
The restaurant, part of franchise chain that got its start in Pennsylvania, is known for its fun decor that pays tribute to old-school gas stations. Among its features are muscle cars displayed overhead on hydraulic grease racks, motorcycles and automotive memorabilia. The green-and-white exterior is eye-catching and the house wings have earned numerous accolades over the years.
