Two Texas cities among 20 most LGBT-friendly

Seattle was recently crowned the LGBT-friendliest city in America by financial consumer site NerdWallet. Seattle beat out other famously gay-welcoming cities like San Francisco and New York.

Two Texas cities made the list, although Houston is not one of them but Dallas and Austin did. In November 2013, Houston began providing health benefits to partners in same-sex marriages performed in jurisdictions where such marriages are legal. The new benefits rules, however, were not enough to get Houston in the top 20 based on the following criteria:

Percent of households with same-sex partners (2012 Census);Laws and practices that protect gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people from discrimination (based on Human Rights Campaign's Municipality Equality Index); and Low rate of LGBT hate crimes per population.

So what makes Seattle so great for the LGBT community? And why did it beat out San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles?
