Checkers burger chain coming to Houston

The Checkers hamburger chain is coming to Houston.


The first Checkers will open in Houston in either December or January of next year, said Jennifer Durham, vice president of franchise development for Tampa, Fla.-based Checkers & Rally's Restaurants which operates under the names Checkers and Rally's and has almost 800 U.S. locations.


After the first store debuts in Houston, two or three more Checkers restaurants will open in the first quarter of next year, and a total of five should be operating in the area by the end of 2015, she said. All five will be in southwest Houston, in and around the 610 Loop, she said.


The company has approved five franchisees for the Houston area, she said.


Currently the only Checkers location in Texas is in Beaumont. It has been there since 1993.


Checkers sells hamburgers, seasoned fries, chicken sandwiches, wings, ice cream desserts and more.


Checkers has the most locations are in Florida, Durham said. The first Checkers opened in Mobile, Ala. in 1986.
