Is it legal or not in Texas?

Water cooler talk often turns to what's legal, or not, in the Lone Star State. Here are some of the

Is it legal or not in Texas?

Is it legal to pick bluebonnets?

Yes, within reason. Law officers won't let you plow up a field along the highway, but you don't have to spank your child for plucking one. In this photo, Marcella Arredondo takes photos of her niece and son in a Houston patch in April.

Cellphone use while driving

There's no actual statewide ban on cellphones while driving. But Texas does bar cell use if the driver is under 18, or you're in a school crossing zone, among other restrictions. And cities have their own laws, especially about texting.

Lighting up your auto

Some automobile accent lights are OK. Texas law allows neon lights on both the interior and exterior of vehicles, as long as the light is no more than 300 candlepower. But color matters. Stay away from red, blue and other colors designated for emergency personnel.

Bottomless brunch?

Mimosa's are a staple of weekend brunch, but a bottomless serving of booze is prohibited in Texas. You'll have to buy your drinks one at a time.

Riding in a pickup bed

No, it's not illegal, but there are some restrictions. For one, the driver faces a fine of $25 to $200 for kids under 18. Some notable exceptions include hayrides, parades and if it's the only vehicle you own.

Kids and Cars

You're not supposed to leave a child in a motor vehicle for any length of time. It becomes a crime when it's longer than five minutes, the child is younger than 7 and left alone.

Motorcycle helmets

Licensed riders are not required to wear a helmet. But there are stipulations. You have to be at least 21, complete a training and safety course, and have health insurance that covers your injuries.
