Tech Tip Thursday

tips and tricks to work more securely Part 2

1.    Use password protection on your screensaver

Sometimes you're away from your desk for longer than you expected. Be prepared for such situations by password protecting your screensaver with this helpful tips and trick. Your PC will lock itself after a specified amount of time.

This is how you establish screensaver password protection in Windows 7:

o    Right click anywhere on your desktop

o    Click Personalize, and then click the Screen Saver section.

o    Change wait time to 10 minutes or less.

o    Select On resume, display logon screen.

o    Click Apply.

2.    Encrypt files containing confidential or business critical information

You keep valuable and sensitive data on your computer. You might have sensitive information about your company or clients, or your personal bank statements on a laptop you use at home and at work. Encrypting your data keeps this information as secure as possible. To help prevent unauthorized users from accessing your data—even if your computer is lost or stolen—you should encrypt all sensitive data. In the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista, you can use BitLocker™ Drive Encryption to encrypt the entire hard disk. In Windows XP and all other editions of Windows Vista, you can use the Encrypting File System (EFS) to protect important files. We highly recommend that you learn how to encrypt a file or folder to keep it safe by reading the following tips and tricks.

3.    Don't open questionable emails

This is a tips and tricks classic: If an email message just doesn't look right, it probably isn't. Forward the email message to your IT administrator to verify that it is virus and malware free before you open it.

4.    Encrypt email messages when appropriate

If you're sending confidential or business-critical information, encrypt the email and any files attached to it. Only recipients who have the private key that matches the public key you used to encrypt the message can read it.

5.    Use the Junk Email Filter in Outlook

Receiving spam or junk email messages is annoying and the viruses potentially associated with them can cause damage to your computer and your company's network. The Junk Email Filter reduces the amount of junk email messages or spam you receive in your Inbox. As a default setting your Junk Email Filter is already active, but only to catch the most obvious spam. Change your Junk Email Filter settings with the tip below and increase your computer’s security.
